 STEP 4

 SCRIPTURE VERSE + LESSON

In today’s Bible story, we learn of a king named David.  Now you may remember the story of David and Goliath where the young boy, David, killed the giant, Goliath, with a sling and a stone.  Well, David grew up and God had more plans for David to accomplish.

Lately, David has been a successful warrior and military leader.  At this point in his life, though, he’s on the run.  A jealous king named Saul has been after David, so David and his warriors have been hiding out in the wilderness.

In the wilderness, David and his men ran into shepherds caring for large flocks of sheep owned by a rich man named Nabal. David and his men helped protect Nabal’s sheep from danger.

Sheep could be attacked by wild animals.  They could fall into deep crevices and get stuck and die.  They could run out of food and water.  Remember, David had been a shepherd when he was younger, so he knew all the dangers the sheep and shepherds faced.

Later, it was sheep-shearing time for Nabal.  Shearing the wool off of sheep was a sort of holiday, a time to celebrate.  David sent 10 of his men to Nabal with a friendly greeting.  The greeting reminded Nabal that David and his men had helped and protected his shepherds and sheep, and had never stolen anything from them.  Then one of David’s men said: “So would you be kind to us, since we have come at a time of celebration?  Please share any provision you might have on hand with us.”

But Nabal wasn’t the nicest guy around.  In fact, he was pretty mean and rude.  He sneered at David’s men.  Do you know what a sneer is?  It’s a nasty, mocking face.  With his sneer, Nabal said, “Who is this fellow David?  Who does he think he is?”  He even called David a runaway servant and outlaw.

Well, the men went back and told David what Nabal had said.  How would you feel if you had been nice to someone and then they rejected you?  I’m guessing you wouldn’t feel happy at all.  That’s how David felt too.  In fact, he was furious!  He told his men, “Get your swords!” as he strapped on his own sword.  David and 400 of his men set out to confront Nabal!

Meanwhile, one of Nabal’s servants ran to Nabal’s wife, Abigail.  He told her what was going on and said, “You’d better do something.  There’s going to be trouble!”  Abigail wasted no time.  She quickly gathered up bread, cooked meat, fruit, and fig cakes.  She told her servants to load the food onto donkeys and quickly take it to David and his men.

Meanwhile, David was telling his men, “He repaid me evil for good.  I’m going to get even.  There won’t be one man of his household alive in the morning!”  Whoa!  That doesn’t sound very good!  When Abigail saw David, she got off her donkey and bowed to him.  She said, “I accept all blame.  Please listen.  Nabal is evil and ill-tempered; don’t pay any attention to him.  Don’t kill anyone and have it be a blemish on your record when you become king.

David was amazed.  He said, “Praise the Lord, who sent you to me today!  Thank God for your good sense!  Bless you for keeping me from murder and vengeance.”  Abigail brougtht peace to this angry situation!  You know, God made Abigail.  He gave her good sense and quick thinking.  He gave her a heart for peace and kindness.  God made her for a reason, and God made you for a reason too!

 STEP 5

 LESSON SONG

Our lesson song will remind you that God – who made the sunrises and rain – made you, too!

 STEP 6

 PRINTABLE ACTIVITY

 STEP 7

 CLOSING THEME SONG

God does indeed have a purpose for your life.  He has made you to be exactly who you are meant to be.  Maybe you are asking who that is and how will I know when I am the special person God designed me to be.  Take a listen to this song and feel free to dance around the house…watching out for the LEGO bricks of course.

 STEP 8

 CLOSING PRAYER

[OPTIONAL]
Go Deeper:
Encourage each member of your family to pray.  This could be something that praises God for who He is, it could be a confession of sin, it could be something worth being thankful for, and/or it could be a request to God.
Dear Jesus

When we look around at all You made, we are often amazed!  From the sun, moon, and stars, to the smallest details we can see in a leaf.  God, we know that You made us and all things, and that everything You’ve created has a purpose.  Help us as each of us learn more about You to understand what our purpose in this life is.  Please give us the courage and wisdom to use our talents and abilities to love You and serve others as well.  Thank You for Maker Fun Factory and all the other VBS programs that teach us about You.

In Your wonderful name we pray,
Amen!
